Clinical Crowley shoots Dohenys to ‘B’ title

DOHENYS had some consolation for losing the senior football championship decider to Nemo Rangers when they won the county “B” JHC title at Pairc Ui Rinn on Saturday.

The Dunmanway club deserved their victory and had David Crowley to thank, as he scored six of his side’s nine points, all from placed balls. Their win means the title has gone to the Carbery division for the fifth year in-a-row.

While the hurling was certainly not for the purist, with poor striking and some crude tackling, the west Cork side won because they had a few fine hurlers. Tadhg O’Leary was rock solid at full-back, outside him Denis Lyons never put a foot wrong, Conor Collins and Denis Healy ensured they won the midfield exchanges while Patrick McCarthy was the pick of the forwards and deservedly won the man of the match award.

Killavullen disappointed — their attackers could make no impression and never threatened the goal which might have made all the difference. John O’Regan, a former county minor, was expected to give the north Cork side some forward punch but he was completely blotted out by Keith Sheehan.

Dohenys’ fitness from their football exploits was very evident and they were full value for their 0-4 to 0-1 lead after 12 minutes. Killavullen’s poor shooting cost them several scores, but they finished the half strongly and were just a point in arrears at the break as Dohenys failed to score for the last 16 minutes.

With the wind to their back on the changeover, the north Cork champions were expected to make the running. However, Dohenys stepped up a couple of gear and by the end of the third quarter had stretched their lead to four points, 0-7 to 0-3, thanks to David Crowley.

Play became very scrappy and the referee issued four yellow cards, three to Killavullen. The north Cork side put in a great last quarter but couldn’t breach the Dohenys defence in which Tadhg O’Leary was outstanding.

Late points by David Hartnett and Bartley Hayes left a goal between the sides as the game went into injury-time, but Dohenys held firm for a deserved victory and a place in the higher grade for 2007.
