Jacob strike proves key as Oulart cruise into semi-final

Oulart-The-Ballagh 2-19 Monageer-Boolavogue 0-11

Very little separated the sides during the opening 20 minutes but it was Jacob’s opportunist goal that left the title-holders with a 1-8 to 0-7 lead at the interval.

The second half, however, was all one-way traffic as Oulart hit the opposition with an unanswerable 1-7 during the third quarter, the goal coming from William Whelan, to lead 2-15 to 0-7. Although the opposition hit back with points from Shane Fenlon, Niall O’Loughlin and John Breen, it was Oulart who marched through to a semi-final clash with St Martin’s — a repeat of last year’s final.

Scores for Oulart-the-Ballagh: M Jacob 0-7; R Jacob 1-3; W Whelan 1-0; M Storey 0-3; D Nolan, S Doyle 0-2 each; A O’Leary, D Stamp.

Scorers for Monageer-Boolavogue: M Kelly 0-5; J Doyle 0-3; S Fenlon, N O’Loughlin, J Breen 0-1 each.

Rathnure 2-15 Cloughbawn 2-4

TWO goals in the opening 10 minutes set Rathnure up for a comfortable victory over neighbours Cloughbawn in their Wexford SHC quarter-final clash at Wexford Park yesterday.

Cloughbawn could only manage two first half points from Ben Traynor frees and trailed 2-9 to 0-2 at the interval.

When keeper Noel Carton crashed home goals from two 21-metre frees it briefly brought the game to life, but points from Paul Codd and Nigel Higgins got the Rathnure show back on the road as they went on to qualify for a semi-final clash with Buffers Alley.

Scorers for Rathnure: S. O’Neill 1-1; M. Byrne 1-0; P. Codd 0-6; N. Higgins, R. Flynn 0-2 each; J. O’Connor, M. O’Leary, T. Hogan, 0-1 each.

Scorers for Cloughbawn: N. Carton (2-0 frees); B. Traynore 0-2 frees; M. Redmond (0-2).
