Irish Rail said while they expected that level of demand, the speed at which the tickets sold out in Cork was amazing.

Seats on special All-Ireland day trains from Cork, Waterford, Limerick and Mayo went on sale on the Irish Rail website at 10.30am. The three special trains from Cork — a 7.50am from Mallow and a 7.40am and 7.50am from Kent Station — sold out in record time.

“We had 47,000 hits on our website in just 11 minutes for the Cork Waterford semi-final,” said Andrew Roche, Irish Rail’s business development manager in Cork.

“We expected what happened with tickets for the special trains to the All-Ireland final given the number of calls we got to our office beforehand. But we were amazed at how quickly they went.”

The first train sold out within four minutes. Two trains sold out within nine minutes and seats on all three trains were gone by 10.41am. Seats on the 8.30am and 10.30am trains from Cork on All-Ireland final day are also sold out.

There are, however, a small number of seats left on the 12.30pm train which gets into Dublin at 3.15pm.

Seats are still available on trains leaving Cork on Friday and Saturday and coming back on Monday, Mr Roche said.

“The only hope now is for cancellation of seats coming back to us,” he said.

“We have no control over that or when it will happen. Those seats will automatically appear on our website when they come back to us.”

Seats were still available on Irish Rail’s website last night on special trains from Waterford, Limerick Junction, Ballina and Westport. Irish Rail will carry about 3,500 people from Cork over All-Ireland weekend — double the usual amount.

“Our advice for people travelling that weekend is to pre-book your tickets online,” Mr Roche said.
