Daly calls for golf greenkeeper solution to ‘concrete’ Croker

PROFESSIONAL golf green-keepers should be brought in by the GAA authorities to oversee the condition of the Croke Park pitch, claimed Clare manager Anthony Daly, after his side trounced Wexford in yesterday’s All-Ireland SHC quarter-final.

“The field is lovely to look at. It is a delight to walk on it but underneath it’s like concrete.

“Colin Lynch fell and hurt himself and other players were sliding all around the place. We tried all different kinds of studs but none seem to work. The ground has to be examined and put in proper order before the semi-finals,” said Daly.

Daly was perturbed by the one-sided nature of the game: “As far as I’m concerned it is a case of mission accomplished.

“Before the start of the season we set our target on reaching the semi finals of the All-Ireland. That goal has now been achieved and we will take it from there.

“It might not have been a pretty game to watch but our aim was to win and we achieved that and from our point of view there were a lot of positives to be taken out of this match.

“Our full-back line performed admirably while substitutes Declan O’Rourke and Daithí O’Connell acquitted themselves well.

“These were the pluses for us but I must admit that I expected much more from Wexford.

“We were led to believe that Wexford would come at us with all guns blazing. We expected them to be all fired up, really up for this one. But when we went 0-5 to 0-1 in front after the opening sequences their heads seemed to drop.

“At times maybe we took our foot off the pedal but the lads carried out their instructions to the full — get ahead and stay ahead —- that’s what winning is all about.”

And Daly was confident that the big name players he replaced because of injury yesterday, team captain Sean McMahon and midfielder Colin Lynch, will be fit for the semi-final.
