Cahill ‘okay’ after collapse
Mr Cahill fell to the ground and was immediately assisted by medical personnel.
He was suffering from severe chest pains. An ambulance arrived shortly to assist him, and after a 20-minute delay, referee Dermot Monaghan abandoned the game.
Last night a Glenville spokesman said that Mr Cahill is “reasonably okay” but that he’ll remain in hospital to undergo further tests.
Glenville’s Oliver Manley said: “I’d like to thank everyone at Mayfeld GAA club for their help on Saturday night. The emergency services came as quickly as possible.”
The referee said he had no choice but to call a halt to proceedings with exactly 57 minutes and 56 seconds gone on the clock. Nemo were leading 0-10 to 0-6 but before Mr Cahill’s collapse, Conor Allen was red-carded following an off-the-ball incident. Nemo coach Stephen O’Brien expressed grave concern over the health of Mr Cahill and wished him a speedy recovery.
“We would hope that it (the match) can be re-fixed for some time during next week because we have four players going to Australia. But it’s all up in the air at the moment.”
Mr Cahill had four sons involved in Saturday night’s fixture. Richie and Paudie started the game while Noel and Ger were also on the panel.
Mr Manley said last night: “I think it has to go to a replay, although we accept that Nemo were probably better than us on the night. There is some talk about holding the match on Tuesday (tomorrow) night but we’d have difficulty with that. Liam is a selector and would be keen to be involved if there was a replay.”
Nemo led 0-6 to 0-4 at half-time and it was 0-10 to 0-6 in Nemo’s favour when the game was abandoned.
