O’Connell’s cracker decisive as Inniscarra advance

Inniscarra 1-14 St Finbarr’s 1-8

The summer sunshine of the previous week gave way to wet almost arctic conditions, with St Finbarr’s coping better in the opening phases.

The city side grabbed the lead through an Owen Fitzpatrick point in the third minute before Stephen Olden replied for Inniscarra from long range a minute later.

Then the Barrs were gifted a goal from the puck-out as Paul Kennedy collected possession and raced through with ease before hammering the ball to the net.

Despite the advantage of a strong wind, Inniscarra struggled to make an impression on the scoreboard. Stephen Olden had his first of three points after seven minutes and they had six wides before John Casey fired an inspirational point from long range after 10 minutes.

Now Inniscarra were in the ascendancy but the scores came slowly — an Aidan O’Mahony point in the 13th minute, a point from Dan O’Connell three minutes later — and they were leading by five in the 28th minute when they got the decisive score.

That came in the form of a brilliantly-executed goal by O’Connell, who rounded two defenders before placing the sliotar out of Fergal O’Mahony’s reach for a 1-9 to 1-3 interval lead.

St Finbarr’s, with a weaker wind at their backs, had a point in the first minute of the second half from Paul Harte but Stephen Olden replied and Inniscarra had all the answers from there on.

St Finbarr’s had Paddy Crowley sent off following an incident in a crowded goal-mouth five minutes from full-time and Inniscarra closed the game with a point from midfielder Liam Ryan.
