Conway points the way for clinical College

A TEXTBOOK finish powered UCC to a 10-points victory over Carrigdhoun in the opening game of the Evening Echo Cork Co SHC at Shanbally last night.

A litany of points without reply in the closing stages broke the hearts of the Divisional side and set up last season’s defeated semi-finalists for a smooth progression to the next round.

UCC, with Ronan Conway performing spectacularly on the right flank of attack, always looked the more potent side, but Carrigdhoun tried gamely all through to stay in touch.

Conway, with five points to his credit, was the star of the show for UCC, but centre-forward Richie Flannery, who scored five points from play, and Kevin Hartnett, who was outstanding at centre-back, also played pivotal roles in the win.

Carrigdhoun got off to a an encouraging start with a point from Niall Murphy within 50 seconds and Declan McCarthy hit over a free from 90 metres.

But the home side were rocked in the 10th minute when UCC wing-forward Johnny Crowley billowed their net from close range. But College were never allowed to put daylight between the sides and Carrigdhoun tenaciously hung on.

Stephen Corcoran, with his second point just before the interval, left just the bare minimum between them and the impressive young Carrigdhoun player was unlucky to see his blistering drives turned over by goalkeeper Eanna Martin to leave them level at 1-7 to 0-10 at half time.

Within minutes of the restart, Carrigdhoun appeared on the rack. Kenny converted a 65 and then followed with a splendid point from play. Conway hit two points and UCC looked poised to overwhelm their opponents. But Carrigdhoun held on and resolutely refused to allow the floodgates to be opened even though they always looked in danger of being swamped.

Only five points separated the sides entering the closing stages but UCC upped the tempo and , smoothed their path to a clear-cut triumph.
