Cregan angry as MICE go under to Maynooth

NUI Maynooth 0-13 MICE 0-6

MICE coach Cregan was disappointed at O’Connor’s refusal to allow Kerry stars Michael Frank Russell and Declan Quill line out with his side.

“Obviously, he wanted to keep them in cold storage for the opening of the NFL on Sunday. In my time in management, I always released county players for Sigerson and Fitzgibbon Cup matches. Declan is captain of MICE and did not show up today. Neither did Michael Frank. We could have done with both. After all, we are a very small college with few students to pick from.”

He cited the case of Limerick football skipper Tommy Stack, who jetted into Shannon Airport from New York at 7am before arriving at the game.

“Look at our opponents today...they had players from Mayo, Monaghan, Sligo, Kildare and Offaly who will be involved in league action on Sunday.”

The home team despite having played with the stiffish breeze, trailed by five points (0-9 to 0-4) at the break. Yet after Maynooth landed two quick points after the break, MICE lifted their challenge and conceded just two more scores over a 20 minute period.

The central player for Maynooth was Sligo corner-forward Mark Breheny whose skilful play and shooting power caused problems for Joe Brosnahan and Paudie Reale.

If there was a fault with Maynooth’s play it was their inability to translate possession into scores on the turnover.

However, substitute Alan Dillon corrected matters, and half back Karl Ennis left it 0-11 to 0-4.

Liam Sheehan cut the deficit with two excellent scores, but MICE could not edge any closer. Tadgh Brosnahan and Noel Flynn saw the visitors safely through to the next stage in which they will meet NUIG.
