O’Sullivan inspires Imokilly’s shock win

Imokilly 0-11 Carbery 0-6

Inspired by the brilliance of county hurling full-back Diarmuid O’Sullivan at full-forward, the East Cork divisional side thoroughly deserve their five-point victory and will now meet the winners of tonight’s clash of Muskerry and Seandún in round two.

While all the plaudits will go to O’Sullivan and rightly so, the contributions of Barry Fitzgerald at centre-back, Michael Cussen and Killian Cronin at midfield and Kieran Murphy at centre-forward were massive.

O’Sullivan was part of the Cork senior football scene during Larry Tompkins’ reign as manager before opting to concentrate on hurling, but on the evidence of last night’s performance, could well rekindle the interest of the selectors.

He was magnificent at full-forward, from where he contributed seven of his side’s points. Admittedly, all came from frees and one from a 45, but he had a hand in all his side’s scores, but had the misfortune to miss a penalty.

Carbery went into the game without three key players, Miceál O’Sullivan, John Hayes and Kevin McMahon, and they were sorely missed.

Imokilly has no intention of giving the defending champions an easy ride and with O’Sullivan in sparking form, they deservedly led 0-3 to 0-2 after 15 minutes, O’Sullivan claiming two of their points from frees.

Carbery were on level terms a couple of minutes later after Frank Arundel, easily their best forward, kicked two splendid points in a row. However, it was Imokilly, given a strong midfield pull by the towering figure of Michael Cussen and the industrious Killian Cronin, who did most of the attacking and won a penalty after Mark Hopkins was fouled.

Unfortunately, Diarmuid O’Sullivan’s powerful kick sailed over the bar. It was all Imokilly at this juncture, and they lost another goal chance when Mark Hopkins made his way in along the end line, but his shot ran across the face of the goal with no one there to apply the finish.

Carbery were struggling badly, particularly in defence, where O’Sullivan was giving full-back Eoin Sexton the run around and at the break, Imokilly deservedly held a 0-7 to 0-5 lead after the Cloyne man landed his fourth point. As the defending champions, Carbery were expected to make a determined bid to hold on to their crown, but it was Imokilly who continued to dictate the game and points by O’Sullivan and Cussen stretched their lead as the champions’ title began to totter.

Carbery finally moved Eoin Sexton off O’Sullivan but it mattered little. To the delight of the sparse attendance he pointed a massive shot from all of 50 metres out from goal before setting up his namesake Vincent for another goal chance but the Ballinacurra man was denied by Carbery keeper Pat Prendergast, who made a great save.

With four minutes of normal time to go, Imokilly held an 0-11 to 0-5 lead, but a late point by substitute John O’Connell finally saw Carbery register their first score for 34 minutes play. It was that kind of a night for the former champions.
