Allen was good at his job, too. Every year he won more games than he lost, a boast few can claim in the world of gridiron and for which he was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2002.

Cruelly, he never reached the summit, a Superbowl VII loss to Miami with Washington in 1973 being the closest he ever came to achieving his lifetime goal.
