And it was a sweet win for the Duhallow side, still smarting from a championship final defeat by Bandon last month. On this occasion, Newmarket were a far more formidable side and looked highly motivated.
Canovee could have few quibbles with the result and although there was no questioning the Muskerry side’s commitment, they had no answer to Newmarket’s attractive style of play.
Newmarket played with purpose from the outset and despite passing up a number of scoring opportunities, points by John Ryan and Nickey Flanagan gave them early supremacy.
Despite polished play from Bart Daly, Timothy Murphy, Kevin O’Sullivan, Ryan and Flanagan, scores were at a premium and all Newmarket could muster was a Ryan point to extend their lead to 0-3 to 0-0.
It took Canovee 24 minutes to open their account, a point from Denis O’Sullivan, and it provided them with the perfect boost as points from Kevin Walsh, Paul Healy and O’Sullivan tied matters at 0-4 apiece by the interval.
Canovee did begin the second-half with a flourish and an O’Sullivan point gave them a brief lead. However, Newmarket soon got their act together and the game took a swing towards the Duhallow men again when substitute Michéal O’Connell and Lane found the target to regain the advantage.
Midfielders Timothy Murphy and Kevin O’Sullivan then powered into the fray and Newmarket’s growing confidence was underlined by a succession of well-taken points to which Canovee had no answer.
