Derry make first visit to Dungarvan a winning one
No disputing the merits of the northerners’ victory on a day when they could even afford the luxury of 18 wides.
But they will be the first to acknowledge the stern resistance of a Waterford side denied goals twice by the intervention of the woodwork.
Though they quickly fell 0-5 to 0-1 behind, Waterford gradually settled, and were out of luck in the 23rd minute when Trevor Costello’s
goal-bound drive struck the inside of an upright to deny his side.
However, the goal they well-deserved came deep into first-half injury-time, and a real gem it was, too.
Corner-forward Mark Power ran onto a great delivery from midfielder Karl O’Keeffe and from 10 metres gave keeper Michael Conlon no chance to leave his side just two points adrift at the break, 0-8 to 1-3.
However, within two minutes of the restart, the visitors had the league points effectively in safe keeping. It took Barry Sheehan just 20 seconds to find the Waterford net, and when
Paddy Bradley and Darren Crozier tacked on points, the margin had widened to an intimidating seven.
