Hurling fans have known for two years that some timber used in the manufacture of hurleys was being imported from Wales and Scandinavia due to the lack of suitable ash here.

While it came as a culture shock to the sport's purists, others saw a demand in the market and began stealing ash trees from farmers in Munster to supply hurling strongholds.
