Historic JHC win for Dromina

Dromina 2-13 Argideen Rangers 0-9

Dromina’s historic feat was never in question, and Argideen’s fate was sealed a minute after the resumption when their goalkeeper Noel Cooney failed to convert a penalty.

At this dramatic stage in the lively proceedings, Argideen trailed by three points and although they did succeed in reducing the deficit to the minimum in the 35th minute, it was always obvious they needed a goal to give their challenge an impetus.

Cooney’s penalty attempt was the nearest they came to penetrating an outstanding Dromina defence and in the final analysis it was Argideen’s lack of fire-power that hastened their demise.

In stark contrast Dromina, inspired by a ‘man of the match’ performance from full-forward Martin Finn, capitalised to the full on the chances that came their way.

Scorers: Dromina: G. Hayes 1-2; G. Buckley 1-1; M. Finn 0-7 (0-3 from 65s); J. Finn 0-2; D. Morrissey 0-1.

Argideen Rangers. M. Walsh 0-3; S. O’Mahony 0-3 (0-2 from frees); M. O'Callaghan, B. Harte and T. Crowley 0-1 each.

It appeared as if this enthralling Cork County Junior B football championship semi-final replay at Bandon yesterday was heading for extra time, until up popped Muintir Bháire super-sub Clive Cremin to flash over a superb winning point with just a minute remaining, propelling his side to a first ever decider at this level and a meeting with Rathpeacon on a 1-12 to 2-8 scoreline.

Scorers: Muintir Bháire: F. Arundel 0-4, 0-3 from frees, F. O’Driscoll 0-4, 0-2 from frees, T. O’Donovan 1-0, P. McGrath 0-2, C. Cremin 0-1, S. Arundel 0-1.

Lisgoold: P. Stack 1-6, 1-0 from penalty, 0-3 from frees, M. O’Connell 1-1, M O’Shea 0-1.

CLASS always prevails and although Kanturk gave it one mighty go for 40 minutes of this Cork County U-21HC semi-final at Castletownroche yesterday, once Ronan Carroll pounced for a goal, after good work by Ciaran O’Leary, champions Erins Own were on their way to another decider winning 2-13 to 0-8.

A tremendous midfield show from Mark O’Connor, some real class from Fergus Murphy up front and a battling performance from Barry Poland in the second-half enabled Erins Own to power home, shaking off their first-half lethargy to set up a final meeting with either Valley Rovers or Glen Rovers.

Scorers for Erins Own: F. Murphy 1-3, M. O’Connor 0-5 (0-4 frees), R Carroll 1-0, S. Kelly 0-2, K. Murphy (free), P. Fitzgerald, C. Coakley 0-1 each.

Kanturk: F. Browne 0-6 (frees), D. Mullane, J. Brennan 0-1 each.

A pointed free from Brian Canty with the last puck of the game enabled Valley Rovers to secure a dramatic 2-12 to 3-8 victory in this Cork County U-21 HC quarter-final replay at Cloughduv yesterday.

Scorers for Valley Rovers: B Canty 1-5 (0-5 frees), R Butler 1-4, M O'Brien (free), K Canty, T Fitzgerald 0-1 each.

Inniscarra: D O’Riordan 2-1 (1-1 frees), D O’Connell 1-1, S Olden 0-3 (0-3 frees), A O’Mahony, J Casey, B O’Keeffe 0-1 each.

JOY at last for Ballincollig - a brilliant second-half display blowing St Martin’s away, 2-12 to 2-5, at Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday in a Cork County M‘A’HC final replay that was both lively and entertaining with some good hurling talent dazzling in the splendid sunshine.

No question Ballincollig, trailing 1-4 to 2-2 at the break, while playing with the breeze at their backs looked in big trouble. But some astute dressing-room switches worked the oracle and the Kilworth boys, despite scoring first in the second-half, just couldn’t live with the power and purpose of the mid-Cork side.

Scorers for Ballincollig; A. O’Donovan 2-4 (1-4 frees), C. Weste 0-2, D. Bowen, B. Cotter, K. Kelleher, E. Hegarty, B. McElligott, G. O’Callaghan 0-1 each.

St. Martin’s: T. Twomey 1-3 (0-3 frees), P. Hoye 1-0, J. Moakley, P. Lynch 0-1 each.
