Cork call-ups for Gardiner and Ó hAilpín

NA PIARSAIGH young lions John Gardiner and Setanta Ó hAilpín have been given starting positions on the Cork team for Sunday's glamour

Allianz NHL confrontation with All-Ireland champions Kilkenny at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

Both former All-Ireland minor medal winners, Gardiner and Ó hAilpín were called in as substitutes during last weekend's triumph over Clare at Cusack Park. Gardiner replaced Jason Barret, while Ó hAilpín deputised for Eoin Fitzgerald at right corner-forward.

Barrett and Fitzgerald now find themselves on the substitutes bench alongside Paul Tierney, whose midfield slot has been allocated to Micky O'Connell.

Gardiner's re-introduction at right half-back releases Diarmuid O'Sullivan to take over the left half-back position, with Tom Kenny moving to partner O'Connell in the centre of the park.

This will be Cork's fourth midfield partnership in six game, while O'Sullivan, who received six stitches in a hand wound during the Clare game, has been given the all-clear, as has Joe Deane, who also sustained a knock in that game.

Not so lucky, however, are Seán Óg Ó hAilpín, who has a groin strain, and Timmy McCarthy, still troubled by an ankle injury.

The selection of Setanta Ó hAilpín will be greeted with approval. He scored two goals when introduced against Tipperary while he also played a key role in Waterford IT's superb Fitzgibbon Cup triumph.

Kilkenny, who lost their unbeaten 13-match run when they fell to arch rivals Tipperary on Sunday last, have made two changes for their joust with the Rebels.

Pat Tennyson comes in at midfield for Jimmy Coogan, while Conor Phelan replaces Brian McEvoy at right half- forward.

'Hurler of the Year' Henry Shefflin continues at centre-forward with D. J. Carey in the right corner.

But there is no place in the starting 15 for captain Charlie Carter. Former skipper Andy Comerford is due to undergo a fitness test tonight and if he is passed fit he will be included among the substitutes.

Following their agonising one point defeat by Offaly last Sunday, Laois have axed four of their forwards for Monday's game with Limerick at Portlaoise.

Out are Joe Phelan, Tommy Fitzgerald, Liam Wynne and Patrick Madden and they are replaced by Brian

McCormack, Noel Daly, Fionan O'Sullivan and Eamonn Fennelly, while Enda Maher takes over as leader of attack.

Ger Ennis, who came on as a sub during Dublin's clear-cut victory over Derry last time out, is retained at left full-forward for Sunday's duel Offaly at Parnell Park. He takes over from Dermot Reilly.

In defence, left corner-back Ken Ryan and left half-back Ken Elliott swap places.
