Late goals earn Mitchelstown first title after thrilling battle
CBS settled early and were first to score, when Ian Condon pointed a free in the third minute. Richard McEniry followed with a long range pointed free before Gavin Byrd opened Mahon’s account in the 8th minute from a free.
However, Condon added two pointed frees, McEniry pointed another from over 75 yards while Gavin Byrd also pointed from a placed ball.
Mitchelstown led by 0-6 to 0-3 at the break but Mahon improved greatly on the restart, with their half-backs dominating. Points from Brian Aherne and David O’Shea brought the city side level in the 40th minute, 0-6 each.
Mitchelstown hit back and two McEniry points gave them the lead again.
Mahon had levelled again by the 52nd minute when Ian Condon gathered possession from a long range Shane Cahill free and kicked to the net to put three points between the teams.
CBS ensured victory when Alan Lane pounced for their second goal.
