PETER CANAVAN, who revealed yesterday that he had intended to retire at the end of this year’s championship regardless of the outcome, was initially opposed to coming off at half-time in Sunday’s final against Kerry.

But, after taking some time over it during the break, he credited manager Mickey Harte with making "another good call".

Canavan, who was 34 in April and made his championship debut in 1990, agreed his decision to give up had been influenced by the injury problems of the last two seasons.
