Big Dan can get even better, says Justin

DAN SHANAHAN, Waterford’s sensational scoring machine, has the potential to become a truly great hurler.

Big Dan can get even better, says Justin

That’s the tribute paid to the Lismore clubman by the Déise manager Justin McCarthy who described his in-form attacker as “a huge asset” to the recently-crowned Munster champions.

McCarthy was speaking at the presentation of the Park Hotel Waterford Sport Star Of The Month award for June to the man the fans affectionately call “Big Dan” and who has bagged an incredible six goals and four points against Clare, Tipperary, and Cork en route to Waterford’s second provincial title win in three years.

The Waterford boss said Shanahan has been exceptional throughout both league and championship and is a pleasure for any manager to be involved with.

“He carries out all the instructions delivered to him with refreshing honesty,” McCarthy said, “and in all our games so far has come up with something special when we needed him to do so”.

McCarthy said Shanahan has become something of a national hero and deserves all the recognition and plaudits he is getting. “There is even more, much more in fact, to come from him,” he added.

County Board chairman, Paddy Joe Ryan, said Shanahan was a gentleman and sportsman supreme. “In my ten years as county chairman,” Ryan said, “I have dealt with a lot of players but I have never met the likes of Dan.”

He said these are great times for Waterford hurling with McCarthy the latest recipient of the Jury’s Hotel Manager of the Month award and Waterford players winning three Vodafone monthly awards on the trot. “Hopefully,” he added, “there will be All-Ireland glory to savour in September.”
