Carrigdhoun off to good start

Carrigdhoun 1-14 Avondhu 0-3

Carrigdhoun, threatening to become a force in recent years, fulfilled their potential even though their demolition job was made easy by an insipid Avondhu performance.

A Barry O’Keeffe free gave Carrigdhoun the lead after only three minutes but within seconds Elton Pierce equalised for Avondhu and, in a lively opening quarter, the North Cork side took control.

Unfortunately, their kicking was way off target and five wides in succession left Carrigdhoun hanging on. But then the South East side sparked into action. Joe Kingston kicked them back into the lead in the 15th minute and centre-forward Padraig Buckley scored a magnificent goal after being set up by Joe Shanahan.

Carrigdhoun increased their lead with a splendid point from centre-back Ger Spillane and with Avondhu continuing to be wayward Carrigdhoun showed them how it was done with another pointed free from O’Keeffe and a splendid effort from Peter Murphy.

Growing in confidence, the Carrigdhoun full forward, brother of Cork senior, Nicholas, added two further excellent points as Carrigdhoun hit a purple patch and powered their way into a 1-7 to 0-1 interval lead.

Avondhu had a mountain to climb and there was never any semblance of a comeback. Indeed their only reply was two second-half points from Michael Monaghan and Elton Pierce. This was a lamentable display by Avondhu, who did not have even one training session.

On the other hand Carrigdhoun, who were well prepared, had second-half points from Chris O’Neill, Michael Prout, Joe Kingston, Joe Shanahan, Brian Sweeney, Fiachra Lynch and substitute Grant O’Brien to run out easy winners.
