Youthful Kilmallock dig deep to sink ’Well

Kilmallock 2-15 Patrickswell 1-16

“Just like the ‘Well over the last few decades, our own youth policy is now beginning to reap dividends,” claimed a delighted Kilmallock club chairman Michael Fitzgerald at the end of an eventful game.

He said they had nurtured this team since underage level, and he predicted bright futures for such talents as David O’Shaughnessy, brother to Andrew, John Kelly, son of the legendary Paddy Kelly, and Eoin Ryan, all sampling the top flight for the first time.

Patrickswell will feel they left this one behind them, starting as they did with three rapid-fire points from Peter O’Reilly, Declan O’Grady and Timmy Sheehan. However, they never really recovered after Andrew O’Shaughnessy, who had moved to full forward to square up to Ciarán Carey, goaled on 22 minutes, to leave the score 0-5 to 1-3.

Kilmallock’s confidence soared after O’Shaughnessy’s goal, one carved by wing back Tony Maguire. Few performed better that veteran Mike Houlihan, at centre forward, and he went on to register three valuable points.

Former county player Barry Foley kept the city club in touch to half time with a series of points and they were behind by just two, 1-8 to 0-9 at the interval.

Patrickswell were re-energised in their third quarter, with Paul O’Grady and Barry bringing them back on terms, and substitute John McDermott put the pressure on Kilmallock with a 37th minute goal. They were sitting comfortably at 1-14 to 1-10 in 45 minutes, but then lost their way again. Mike Houlihan, in his 20th season as a senior, sparked a Kilmallock revival with a long range point.

Andrew O’Shaughnessy narrowed the gap still further before setting up county minor star Eoin Ryan for a crucial second goal, to send Kilmallock in front 2-12 to 1-14.

Substitute John McDermott brought the teams level for only the second time over the hour, but Kilmallock finished on a high to claim victory.
