Limerick to field two teams in Munster colleges football

LIMERICK will field two teams in next season’s Irish Examiner Corn Uí Mhuirí (Munster colleges SFC).

Two seasons ago a team representing the colleges of the city took part, with little or no success, and following the recent AGM of the Munster Colleges it was agreed to permit a team representing the colleges in South Limerick to take part in the 2003/’4 championship.

The move is aimed at raising the standard of football within the county and building on the momentum of the senior team. The AGM also sanctioned the amalgamation of St Caimin’s Community School and St Patrick’s Comprehensive School, Shannon for the Irish Examiner Dr Harty Cup which will give Clare three teams in the championship.

Both schools will also compete individually in the senior B and senior C competitions.

The meeting turned down a request to allow players attached to Meanscoil San Nicolas An Rinn to play with Dungarvan CBS in the Harty Cup for a trial period of one year.

There is already a combined team from Waterford which includes players from An Rinn taking part in the Harty Cup under the name of Coláistí na Déise.

The Colleges Council elected a new chairman, Timmy O’Callaghan of Charleville CBS. He replaces John Sexton (Scarriff) who has completed his three-year term. Edward Moroney (Scarriff) is the new vice-chairman.

O’Callaghan is a former Cork senior footballer and a current county selector. He previously served as chairman of the Munster Colleges Council and also as a member of the All-Ireland Colleges Council.
