It was a solid performance from Ballygunner, who had centre-forward Andy Moloney and corner forward Gearoid O’Connor in sparkling form. It was Tommy Power who gave them the lead in the first minute and they never really looked back, although Lismore always kept the score tight enough to be dangerous.
They were five points down five minutes from half time but went into the break trailing by just three after well taken scores from Dave Bennett, John Heneghan and county minor, Brendan Bennett.
They were off to a flyer in the second half when Dave Bennett drove over two points to draw them level and when Gearoid O’Connor restored Ballygunner’s lead, Bennett was on hand again to equalise.
At this point Ballygunner threw everything into attack but they were caught on the wrong foot when Brendan Landers brought off a magnificent save and then drove the ball all the way to Dan Shanahan who raced through and give them the lead with a great point on the run.
Lismore’s joy was short lived. A long range point from Colm Kehoe levelled but Lismore held on stubbornly as the tempo of the game continued to increase.
When Andy Moloney put Ballygunner ahead Dave Bennett again equalised but four points without reply, two from Gearoid O’Connor gave Ballygunner the cushion they needed.
