Ruthless Cats leave DJ out

FORMER Allstar DJ Carey has been left out of the Kilkenny team for the opening defence of their Leinster SHC against Wexford at Croke Park on Sunday.

The defending All-Ireland champions showed no mercy when they picked the team and, in all, three of the McCarthy Cup side will sit out theaction.

Carey has been troubled by a neck injury in recent weeks and he missed an amount of training. However, he was available for selection, but he didn't make the cut.

"DJ lost out on a lot of training because of the injury," said Kilkenny manager Brian Cody. "However, I would be confident that he can do a job for us if we need to call on him."

Two other disappointed players were Paddy Mullally and James Ryall, who featured in last year's McCarthy Cup victory over Cork.

Kilkenny have given a championship debut to Brian Hogan at wing back. The 6'2" O'Loughlin Gaels defender was only called into the squad at the beginning of the season and he has made rapid progress since.

Pat Tennyson displaced Mullally at midfield, while Jimmy Coogan takes over from Carey in attack.

Wexford will be without Allstar forward Paul Codd.

The outstanding Codd suffered a chest muscle injury in a club championship game last month and was unable to participate in training on Monday.

In light of this setback, it appears as if St Martin's Eoin Quigley, son of the legendary John, could be handed a starting role at centre-forward.

With Codd absent, the captaincy will be handed to Rathnure's John O'Connor, who will be handed a championship debut at left half-back in a line-up completed by Rory McCarthy and Declan Ruth.

Rapparees clubmates Adrian Fenlon and Tomas Mahon will comprise midfield, with Barry Lambert, should he overcome a shoulder injury, with Paul Carley completing the half-forward line, while the Jacob brothers, Rory and Michael, will be joined by Mitch Jordan in a lightweight full-forward line. David O'Callaghan will complete his return to hurling on Sunday after being named at right corner-forward on the Dublin team to play Westmeath in Croke Park (2.0).

The skilful St Mark's dual player recently quit Tommy Lyons' football squad to concentrate on hurling and he has been in good form in training since coming back into the hurling fold. Dave Donnelly lines out in the other corner and Dublin will be looking to this quicksilver duo to do the damage against Westmeath.

Sunday's side shows seven changes from Dublin's last championship starting 15 that which lost 1-14 to 1-20 to Offaly in last July's All-Ireland qualifier. Several players were not considered for selection owing to injury, including Stephen Perkins, Tommy Moore, Dave Sweeney, Derek O'Reilly and Shane Martin.

The seven changes from last July's game are Gary Maguire, Simon Daly, Aodán de Paor, David Curtin, Liam Ryan, David O'Callaghan and Dave Donnelly. Kevin Flynn will captain the side.

Westmeath will not name their side until tonight.

Limerick have entered into an arrangement with Galway, Tipperary and Clare to toss for choice of venue should they meet in the All-Ireland hurling qualifiers, with the draws to be made on Sunday.

Sligo have been hit by a spate of injuries as they prepare for Saturday's Bank of Ireland first round football qualifier against Clare at Cusack Park, Ennis. Centre-forward Mark Breheny (calf) and left corner-back Brendan Phillips (shoulder) are the biggest doubts.
