Sherlock injury blow to Cork hopes of qualifying

CORK’S hopes of qualifying for the final of the Allianz National Hurling League suffered a severe setback last night when brilliant right corner-back Wayne Sherlock was injured in a club football game.

Sherlock damaged shoulder ligaments in St Michael’s first-round TSB senior football championship game with UCC and could be out of action for at least a month.

Ironically, after Cork lost to Galway last Sunday team coach Donal O’Grady expressed his concern at intercounty hurling players parading their footballing talents with their club teams. The other big news emanating from the Cork camp is that Brian Corcoran is back in the panel for next Sunday’s clash with Waterford at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

Because of Sherlock’s unfortunate injury, the Cork selectors have left the right corner-back position vacant for the Waterford game. But they have made a number of changes from the side that went under to Galway. Cian O’Connor comes in a left corner-back for Mark Prendergast, while Adrian Coughlan replaces his Blackrock club colleague Paul Tierney at midfield.

Niall McCarthy takes over the centre forward berth from Michael Byrne with Timmy McCarthy starting on this occasion at left half-forward.

Kieran Murphy of Sarsfields is recalled at top of the left with Joe Deane moving to full-forward to the exclusion of Eamonn Collins.

Limerick have made a number of changes on their side to meet Clare at the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday. Albert Shanahan takes over from John Cahill, while Niall Moran and Clem Smith replace Peter O’Reilly and Pat Tobin at midfield. The Limerick selectors have also left two vacancies in attack because of doubts surrounding the availability of Donncha Sheehan and Andrew O’Shaughnessy. Clare will not select their team until tomorrow night.

Dublin, who drew with Antrim last weekend, have named an unchanged team for their game with Offaly at Portlaoise on Sunday strictly for programme purposes only.

Manager Humphrey Kelleher revealed yesterday that he has injury doubts surrounding Kevin Flynn, Shane Martin, Darragh Spain and Keith Wilson and that it may not be possible to finalise his side until just before the throw-in. Rory McCarthy and Willie Doran are likely to miss Wexford’s local-derby clash with Kilkenny at Wexford Park. McCarthy is struggling with an ankle injury, while Doran is extremely doubtful because of a hamstring injury. Kilkenny have named just seven of their All-Ireland winning team: keeper James McGarry, Michael Kavanagh, Seán Dowling, Derek Lyng, Martin Comeford, James Ryall and Eddie Brennan.

Meanwhile, Mark Riordan and Muiris Gavin have been recalled to the Limerick team for Sunday’s NFL semi-final against Kerry at the Gaelic Grounds.
