In the captial, they are the talk of this miserable summer. So, it’s no surprise taxi drivers are getting in on the act. Only a few days ago, one confided that, “Dublin are picking players because they know how to play football now, the last few years, if you were fit and could run, that was good enough to get you on the team.”

In fairness, taxi drivers aren’t exactly a barometer of public opinion, and that particular assertion is a harsh and unfair assessment of Tom Carr’s luckless reign. The footballers, not athletes theory is doing the rounds, however, accompanied by the evidence provided by the sizzling form of Ray Cosgrove.
