Tipp brush Limerick aside with sparkling display

Tipperary 1-12 Limerick 0-6

Inspired by the excellent Darragh Egan at midfield and team captain Brian Mulvihill and Timmy Dalton in attack, Tipp served notice that they will be no pushovers in the semi final.

The Shannonsiders started well with the wind and led by a point after 50 seconds. Tipp were level four minutes later when their highly impressive captain Brian Mulvihill pointed a free and the sides swopped points to be level at 0-2 at the end of the opening quarter.

Limerick’s tactic of playing corner forward Michael Curtin as a third midfielder also failed as Darragh Egan and George Hannigan ruled supreme and with 16 year old Timmy Dalton sparkling up front, Limerick were under enormous pressure. Mulvihill stretched the lead with a point before Eoin Ryan got one back for Limerick, their first for 18 minutes, but it was only a temporary respite.

Dalton showed a clean pair of heels to the Limerick backs as he raced clear before lobbing the keeper for a splendid goal from 13 metres out and Tipp were well worth their 1-6 to 0-3 half time lead.

Tipperary were grateful for an excellent save by their keeper Martin McKeogh who denied substitute Brian Sheehan before the Premier County finally stretched their lead with a brace of points by Egan and Dalton.

Limerick began to struggle again but a couple of substitutions, notably the introduction of Michael Galvin to midfield and the switch of James Ryan to centre forward began to have the desired effect.

Tipp regained control and with Shane O’Brien excelling at centre forward they carved open the Limerick defence with a great move only to see goalkeeper Thomas Enright bring off a great save from Brian Mulvihill.

It mattered little as Tipp finished with three points on the trot to book their place in the semi finals along with Cork and Kerry.
