Hurney hat-trick hero for Déise
The foundation for victory was in attack, where Patrick Hurney netted a hat-trick of goals, and with Mark Fives and Mark O’Gorman also rifling over points, the result was never in doubt.
Youghal CBS enjoyed a dream start with Eoin O’Loughlin goaling on two minutes. The first of Hurney’s goal brought the winners level in the 7th minute, and while O’Loughlin again eased Youghal in front, it was pretty well downhill for them thereafter.
With Joey Mullen superb at centre-back, the Waterford college took control and when Hurney fired home his second goal, the floodgates began to open.
They led by eight points at the break, (2-9 to 1-4) and though Conor Spillane and substitute Lee Desmond landed two long-range frees, Youghal’s fightback never materialised.
Once Hurney completed his hat-trick in the 40th minute, any lingering doubts about the outcome were well and truly banished.
Their fourth and final goal in the 55th minute was clinically finished by Brian Bannon and the rout was complete.
