Browne breaks Déise hearts

Tipperary 0-18, Waterford 1-12

He kicked 10 points, many of them coming from frees after he was fouled. He set up colleagues too for vital scores.

The home side couldn't have asked for a better start, going four points clear with only as many minutes on the clock. Into the third minute, Johnny Hennessy was unceremoniously taken down by goalkeeper Philly Ryan as he careered goalwards and Connie Power converted the inevitable penalty with Ryan being yellow-carded for his blatant indiscretion.

Power quickly pointed a close-in free and Waterford were off to the proverbial flyer.

Their tactic, too, of playing John Hearne as an extra defender with the curbing of Declan Browne no doubt the main objective worked a treat for a while, and it took Tipp all of 22 minutes to register on the scoreboard with the boot of Browne obliging from a free.

Midfielders Fergal O'Callaghan and Eamonn Hanrahan began to win monopoly possession.

Browne gave them the lead for the one and only time in that opening half with yet another pointed free in the 33rd minute, but Waterford's response was immediate with Andy Hubbart and substitute Wayne Hennessy restoring the Waterford advantage with quality points.

Substitute Benny Hahessy had the final say of the half with a Tipp point as the sides retired at the interval break deadlocked 1-4 to 0-7.

Within 20 seconds of the restart Browne had Tipp in front again with a super point from play. In the space of three minutes Browne scored three more glorious points.

Declan Fanning's score put five points between them.

But Waterford again warmed to the challenge, and inside 90 seconds, midfielders Andy Hubbart and Karl O'Keeffe found the range.

Liam England replied with one for Tipp.

Three more points followed from Johnny Hennessy, John Coffey, and Connie Power (free) to narrow the deficit to the minimum, and though England again came to Tipp's rescue with an important point, it was all-square by the 61st minute after Gary Hurney and Power (free) were on the mark. Tipp surged forward once more with midfielder Fergal O'Callaghan kicking quality points in the 63rd and 64th minutes. The deficit was again down to the minimum when Power replied with one from a Waterford free, but then came the final chapter in the Browne story with another brace of pointed frees.
