Kavanagh proves a real star for Galway

Galway 2-14 Kilkenny 2-7

Kavanagh’s tally of 1-7 in the opening half was enough to kill off the black and amber. Backed by tremendous support play from Tracey Laheen and Aine Hillary the home side clocked up 2-11 that helped them into an unassailable 15-point lead at the break. Notably Hillary sent a sideline cut of 45 metres all the way to the net on the approach to the interval.

However, Sinead Millea set a Cats comeback in motion with a goal eight minutes after the restart but they lost their way until Millea again set up Ann Marie Young for their second goal six minutes from time.

The outcome of this group now hangs in the balance. Both Galway and Kilkeny will have to win their remaining games against Antrim and Cork to qualify for the play-offs.

Antrim1-4

THE most noticeable fact about this result is the likely elimination of Antrim in the Foras na Gaeilge All-Ireland senior camogie championship. With two games played - both at home - they have no points registered and with their final match away to Galway in two weeks time it is unlikely that they will salvage anything from this season’s championship.

By comparison the defending All-Ireland champions had the opportunity to introduce all five substitutes over the hour - with two of those, Elaine Burke and Caoimhe Harrington, netting a goal apiece.

Cork lead 0-8 to 1-3 at half time but they completely took over in the second period with Fiona O’Driscoll, Emer Dillon and Jennifer O’Leary bagging a princely 16-points between them.

Jayne Adams who returned to the team after missing the previous encounter was top-scorer for Antrim with 1-2.

Scorers Cork: F O’Driscoll 0-7, E Dillon 0-5, J O’Leary 0-4, E Burke and C Harrington 1-0 each, R Moloney and P O’Connor 0-2 each, O O’Sullivan 0-1.

Antrim: J Adams 1-2, E Mason and N McCarry 0-1 each.

CORK: G Casey; J O’Callaghan, D Cronin, S Dunlea (capt); P O’Connor, M O’Connor, G O’Connor; V Harris, R Moloney; U O’Donoghue, E Dillon, J O’Leary; O O’Sullivan, C Healy, F O’Driscoll.
