Waterford forced the early pace, and Seamas Prendergast’s superb goal strike on five minutes gave them the perfect start. But with Mark Foley emerging as a major influence at corner back, Ollie Moran rampant at midfield, and Mark Keane unerring in his freetaking, Limerick quickly settled.

Keane put them in front in the 18th minute, and while Waterford benefited from the introduction of Ken McGrath, the winners weren’t flattered by their 0-12 to 1-8 interval lead.
