Kavanagh doubtful after twisting ankle

Brendan Larkin and Michael Ellard

During a light training session, the big midfielder fell heavily and had to be helped off the field. He was later transferred to hospital for x-rays.

A clearly upset team coach Billy Morgan said the timing of the injury couldn’t be worse:

“Our preparations had been going brilliantly and we were looking forward to the Kerry challenge.

“Derek’s ankle swelled up alarmingly and he must be considered extremely doubtful.

With Philip Clifford passed fit after taking a knock on the knee in a recent club game,

Cork had announced an unchanged team prior to the Kavanagh incident.

Meanwhile, the Kerry selectors have raised a few eyebrows by omitting last year’s winning captain Dara Ó Cinnéide from their starting line-up. They have also relegated Mike Francis Russell to the subs bench.

The two changes from the side which easily accounted for Mayo in the quarter-final sees Paul Galvin in for Ó Cinnéide at right half forward and Bryan Sheehan taking over from Russell at left corner forward. This will be Sheehan’s first championship start.

There are also a number of positional changes on the team. Team captain Declan O’Sullivan moves from centre to full forward with Eoin Brosnan now leads the attack. Galvin’s recall to right half forward sees Liam Hassett switch wings.

Not unexpectedly Dublin have announced an unchanged team for Saturday’s All-Ireland quarter final replay with Tyrone at Croke Park.

Paddy Christie has been named at full back despite suffering with a groin injury of late, while Darren Homan has been listed among the subs although he suffered a back injury in training over the weekend.

Tyrone are expected to name their team tomorrow night.
