NICKEY BRENNAN has made it clear to the GPA that the Central Council has not endorsed the concept of Government grants for players and that he personally believes that ‘pay-for-play’ is the ultimate aim of the GPA.

He agreed he had been firm on some matters, but ‘responsive’ in relation to the issue of player welfare - informing Congress that a full-time ‘Player Welfare Manager’ would be appointed as a matter of urgency.

Mr Brennan said at a media briefing after his installation as the 35th President (and Kilkenny’s fourth) that he had held off speaking about the grants issue until he took over from Sean Kelly and met with the GPA.
