Terrific displays from full-back Don O’Connell, centre-back Ken Kearney, midfielders Shane Cotter and Leo Sexton and some great talent up front in Luke McCarthy, Shane Kearney, and Fergal Ryan always had the Mon on the back foot as they struggled to cope with the pace and skill of the Fermoy outfit. Despite Pat Barry getting the Mon off to the perfect start with a pointed free after only two minutes, they had to wait until a minute before the break for their second, Eoin Cronin pointing from play. Barry and Cotter accounted for all the Mon scores but Colman’s were simply the masters all over the park and with Ken Kearney in superb form at centre- back they hit back quickly.
Eoin Barry pointed, Ryan followed with the first of his five first-half frees, and then a goal that epitomised the quality and speed of their play. A terrific run by Cotter put Shane Kearney clear and he set up James Barry for a cracking goal to put Colman’s 1-2 to 0-1 clear after the opening quarter.
It wasn’t that the Mon didn’t have their chances. Cronin had a penalty attempt deflected for a fruitless 65 and with Barry and wing back Eoin McCarthy failing to deliver with several frees, St Colman’s task was made all the easier. With some cracking play they regularly opened up the Mon defence and with Ryan like radar from frees they led 1-8 to 0-2 at the break.
Mark O’Callaghan and Luke McCarthy quickly added to St Colman’s tally after the restart and with the Mon still wayward from placed balls the lively Fermoy side opened up their defence. Keeper Gordon Aherne made a terrific save from Kearney, but the Mon custodian was beaten again in the 43rd minute when he failed to hold Kearney’s shot and corner-forward O’Callaghan had the simplest of tasks in putting the ball in the net.
Leading 2-12 to 0-4 entering the final quarter the contest was all over.
