McKenna leads Limerick as Marsden quits Armagh

FORMER star forward Joe McKenna was last night elected interim manager of the Limerick senior hurling team by his fellow selectors.

McKenna, Declan Nash and county board vice-chairman Liam Lenihan had been given the authority to select a manager from among themselves.

Meanwhile, Armagh forward Diarmuid Marsden has announced his retirement from inter-county football, three days before his 30th birthday.

An Armagh senior since 1993, the 1999 Allstar winner played 25 Ulster Championship games and 17 in the All-Ireland series, culminating in victory in the 2002 All-Ireland final over Kerry.

The Clan na Gael player said he was unable to give the commitment needed for a top county like Armagh.

Elsewhere, Kerry have made three changes from the side that defeated Dublin last weekend for Sunday’s NFL clash with Donegal at Ballybofey.

Michael McCarthy returns to full-back, Eamon Fitzmaurice to centre-back, with Michael Quirke partnering Dara Ó Sé at midfield.

Following their one point defeat by lowly Leitrim last weekend the Clare selectors have made six changes for Saturday’s home game with Longford at Cusack Park.

Dermot O’Brien returns to the goalkeeping spot in place of David McInerney, while Kevin Dilleen, John Moody, Brendan Crowley, Kenny Ryan and Michael O’Dwyer replace Darragh Blake, Mark O’Connell, Ger Turbrody, Sean O’Meara and Enda Coughlan, who was not available.

Dublin make two changes from the team which failed to Kerry for Saturday night’s clash under lights with Westmeath at Parnell Park. Colin Moran and Mark Vaughan come in for Senan Connell and David O’Callaghan, while Jason Sherlock is still out with a calf injury.

The Tipperary team to play Louth on Sunday shows one change from that which lost to Meath. Kevin Mulryan comes in at full-forward in place of Ian Barnes. Declan Browne moves to corner-forward and will captain the team.

DJ Carey has been picked at centre-back for Kilkenny against Laois in the NHL at Portlaoise on Sunday.

Kilkenny will be without Henry Shefflin, nursing a hamstring injury, while Richard Power and John Tennyson are rested.

There are two changes on the Laois team from that which failed to Waterford. Pat Mahon replaces Liam Tynan at centre-back, while Cathal Brophy comes in for Robert Jones at left half forward.

Former Clare goalkeeper Ger O’Connell makes his debut for Limerick against Down on Sunday, to the exclusion of John Cahill. There are four other changes from the team which lost to Tipperary, with Mark Foley, Paudie O’Dwyer, Sean O’Connor and Donnacha Sheehan coming in for Michael Cahill, Pat Sheehan, JP Sheehan and Andrew O’Shaughnessy, the latter unavailable.

Antrim have been struck a major blow in their bid to topple All-Ireland champions Cork at Pairc Ui Rinn on Saturday. Top forward Michael Heron is set to miss out with a knee injury, while Damien Quinn is suspended.
