Holy Rosary had no response as midfielders answer Abbey prayers

Abbey CBS 2-7 Holy Rosary, Mountbellew 0-7

Ryan scored his side’s first goal in the 29th minute to edge the Abbey into a one-point lead at the interval and it was his superb partnership with the equally effective Jones that stymied Mountbellew in the second half.

Although wing forward Gerard Noone pointed Mountbellew into the lead with a free after just two minutes, poor shooting from both sets of forwards was the order of the day in the early moments.

Midfielder Tomas Crowe increased Mountbellew’s lead to two points before stylish wing forward Timothy Dalton levelled matters with two excellent strikes at the end of the first quarter.

It was nip and tuck for the remainder of the first half before Ryan, at the end of a brilliant passing movement, unleashed an unstoppable drive to leave the Tipp students leading by 1-4 to 0-6 at the break.

Mountbellew had cause for hope a minute after the resumption when Noone kicked over the equaliser from a free. But, in tremendous style, Abbey’s tenacious defence held Mountbellew scoreless for the remainder of the game.

The majestic Ryan restored the Abbey’s lead in the 38th minute with a fine point and then came the matchwinning score when corner forward Adrian Grace set up captain Laurence Coskeran for a peach of a goal.

Mountbellew fought gamely, but two late points from frees by Dalton sealed the Tipp triumph.
