Connacht Council warning

THE Connacht Council has warned the public off buying unauthorised GAA calendars in the province.

Connacht Council warning

Earlier this week businesses and residences have been contacted in relation to the calendars with the callers claiming that the product has been fully sanctioned by the Council.

However the executive last night moved to stress that they have given no such permission to any persons.

“It has come to our attention that a company is attempting to organise a calendar on behalf of Connacht GAA Council,” a statement issued last night read.

“Patrons are advised that the Council has not authorised anybody to produce a calendar on their behalf.”

It’s the second calendar row within the GAA in 2005.

Earlier this month the Kilkenny county board threatened to take legal action against merchandisers who continue to exploit the fame of their star players for profit’s sake.

The Cats are furious over pictures of their senior and under 21 hurling teams which have appeared in calendars supported by advertisements, without the permission of the relevant authorities.

Last year Kilkenny commissioned their own new GAA crest in an effort to protect their image rights. The original pictures of the teams had the crest on the players’ jerseys but the crests were air-brushed out of the calendar shots.

Meanwhile Derry will be without Niall McCusker and Fergal McEldowney for tomorrow’s McKenna Cup tie against Queen’s.

McCusker picked up an ankle injury in Saturday’s win over Down, while McEldowney has bruised ribs.

Micheal Kelly replaces McCusker in the full-back line, while Eamon Burke takes over from McEldowney in the Derry forward line.

The other changes see Padraig Kelly replacing Conor McWilliams and keeper Barry Gillis in for Michael Conlon.

Both teams are still in contention for a place in the semi-final against Fermanagh on January 30, although mathematically, Armagh can also qualify.

Derry go into the game on a maximum four points while Queen’s have two points from their two games.

DERRY (SF v Queen’s): B Gillis, K McGuckin, M Kelly, K McCloy, P Wilson, SM Lockhart, Padraig Kelly, Patsy Bradley, J McBride, Paul Murphy, C Gilligan, Paul Bradley, Padraig Murphy, Paddy Bradley, E Burke. Subs: M Conlon, C McWilliams, P McFlynn, S Kelly, C O’Neill, D Scullion, S Devlin.
