CBC show hurling skills with win over Farranferris

CHRISTIAN Brothers College, Cork, one of the great rugby schools, proved they can play hurling too with a 4-9 to 3-11 victory over Farranferris in the Locker Room O'Callaghan Cup (Cork Colleges "A" SHC) quarter-final yesterday.

It was an historic victory for CBC and sets up an intriguing semi-final clash with St Colman's in a fortnight's time.

Christians laid the foundations for their success in the first-half while playing with the aid of a gale force wind, when they led 3-6 to 0-6 at half-time.

It was backs to the wall for most of the second-half as Farna cut the deficit to the minimum by the three-quarter stage, but a Peter Nodwell goal steadied the ship for Christians, who held on for a one point victory.

Joe Jordan gave a flawless display at centre-back, ably assisted by Peter O'Driscoll, a county minor this year. For team coach Donal O'Mahony it was a tremendous result.

"We are thrilled with the win. Farna were in last year's final and wanted to win this title before their school finally closes in two years' time. We soaked up enormous pressure in the second- half and the lads did exceptionally well. I'm very proud," he said.

In the other quarter-final ties, St Colman's had no difficulty in disposing of Carrignavar by 3-10 to 0-8; Midleton CBS were comfortable winners over Douglas CS, 3-13 to 0-12, while Coláiste Chriost Rí had a facile win over Youghal CBS, 2-12 to 0-9.
