Galway goals send Kingdom packing

Galway 4-13 Kerry 2-10

Two cracking goals in the opening minutes by Annette Clarke and Niamh Falvey got Galway off to the perfect start and while Kerry battled bravely to stay in the hunt, two further goals put the issue beyond doubt long before the final whistle.

Galway struck for their opening goal in the second minute when Niamh Fahey put Annette Clarke through and she billowed the net from close range.

The Kerry defence looked very vulnerable under pressure and was breached a second time in the eighth minute when Niamh Duggan was fouled going through, and Niamh Fahey dispatched the resultant penalty.

Kerry were far too reliant on Geraldine O’Shea for scores and after she kicked over a succession of points, Galway struck for their third goal. In another marvellous passing movement, they ripped the Kerry defence apart for the impressive Niamh Fahey to put sub Lisa Coohill through and she gave the goalkeeper no chance from five metres out.

That goal helped the defending champions to a 3-4 to 0-7 half time lead. With little to lose the girls from the Kingdom threw down the gauntlet to Galway on the changeover. With Sarah O’Connor sparkling on the wing, the Munster side rattled in 1-3 without reply, all in the space of five minutes, to level the game.

The goal was a magnificent effort finished in style by Patrice Dennehy from a delightful long ball from Sarah O’Connor. However Galway always had the facility to step up a gear and with Niamh Fahey and Lorna Joyce tormenting the Kerry defence, Philomena Ní Fhlatharta pounced for another goal.

Kerry weren’t quite ready to roll over and Geraldine O’Shea gave her side a glimmer of hope with a goal from a free, but Galway weren’t going to be denied.
