Garryspillane rallyt o stay in the hunt as Kilmallock enjoy easy win

Adare1-12 Garryspillane 1-12

They trailed Adare by four points, with Conor Fitzgerald (2), Donnacha Sheehan and Brian Foley on target.

However, all was soon to change and at the end of a gripping 60 minutes they were unlucky not to have advanced at the first time of asking. It took a late point from a Fitzgerald free to save last season’s beaten finalists.

The Bouncers, inspired by the Ryan trio of David, Donie and TJ, soon clawed their way back and a 22nd minute goal from Donie Ryan left them just two points in arrears, at 0-7 to 1-2. Ryan, again, and Frank Carroll, levelled and they had assumed control 1-6 to 0-8 at the interval.

Adare were rooted to the ground when TJ and Donie Ryan opened a three-point gap, but they saw light once more after Andrew O’Connell goaled, in 41 minutes, to haul them back in front 1-10 to 1-8.

Fitzgerald made their position that bit more secure seconds later, but Garryspillane were not prepared to surrender and centreback Dave Ryan, now moved to centre forward, and Carroll, ignited their charge with four points. They had the bit between their teeth, until Fitzgerald dashed their hopes for another week.

Kilmallock 1-16 Na Piarsaigh 0-10

MANY shrewd observers predict that Kilmallock will be thereabouts when the championship title is handed out in October. On the evidence of their first-half performance at the Gaelic Grounds yesterday, they may not be wrong.

Kilmallock were not as impressive on the change of ends, but they could offer the excuse that with an interval lead of 1-9 to 0-4, their rebuilt team had little to fret about.

Na Piarsaigh had the lead point from Shane O’Neill but failed to build on it. Instead, Mike Houlihan and Derek O’Mahony took over in midfield for the green-and-whites and helped by a seventh minute goal from Mark Cronin, they were in cruise control to the break.

Na Piarsaigh shaped up well immediately on the change of ends with scores from O’Neill, Con Sherlock and Brian Hartnett, but Andrew O’Shaughnessy and Eoin Ryan regained the edge over their markets and soon had Kilmallock moving again to finish much the stronger.
