Fielding seven of the team that helped Abbeyside to a county minor title last week, the Waterford boys, with the assistance of a strong breeze, had notched 2-6 without reply from Coláiste Chríost Rí and after that it was plain sailing.
By half-time the scoreboard read 3-12 to 0-2, with full-forward Mark O'Gorman scoring 2-6.
On the changeover, Críost Rí had the assistance of a strong breeze but there was little respite for them; while O'Gorman was a little quieter, the scoring spree was continued by Brian Bannon, who helped himself to two goals adding to his 1-2 in the first-half.
The Waterford boys sixth goal came midway through the half when O'Gorman laid on a peach of a pass for the in-rushing Mark Fives. That made it two wins in as many starts and showed their triumph over fellow Waterford side, De La Salle, in the opening round may not have been that much of a surprise after all.
For their part, Coláiste Chríost Rí had come up against a determined, well balanced and physically stronger Déise team and, on the day, their younger team had few complaints.
They did reasonably well in the circumstances and for St Finbarr's youngster Roy Leahy, in particular, the outing was most satisfactory. He helped himself to 3-1 and two of the goals were splendidly executed.
Leahy apart, Críost Rí found scoring difficult and their only other marksmen were Brian Cashman and David Coughlan.
