Ten years ago I was part of a marketing and editorial team from a rival newspaper group that planned a ground assault on Cork, to buy up its most vital sporting assets – with the goal of dominating the media landscape.

The plan was complex but the goal was simple – Independent News and Media would capture the hearts and minds of Corkonians – but particularly Irish Examiner readers - through a takeover of the region’s sports infrastructures.
