A review of the sporting year through 'Examiner Sport' covers

The Irish Examiner Sport section produced 327 front covers in 2019, telling the story of the highs and lows of the sporting year.

There were special supplements - a sporting calendar, picture specials, Rugby World Cup and Cheltenham previews, club GAA pullouts, and wraparound covers on bumper weekends - but mainly the covers charted the day-to-day rhythm of the sporting year.

GAA covers owned much of the summer, peaking at 21 front pages in August, with rugby dominating the autumn months, and soccer bookending the year, while golf was the most featured front-cover sport in July, with Shane Lowry taking four covers in a row during his Open Championship win.

Horse racing, athletics, boxing, cricket, and rowing also featured across the year, not to mention the many other sports highlighted above or below the main image.

Rory McIlroy was the most regular cover star, with six appearances, one ahead of Lowry, Mick McCarthy, Peter O'Mahony, and Mo Salah. The GAA covers were more spread out but there were four leading appearances for Seamus Callanan, Patrick Horgan, and Aaron Gillane.
