Simone Biles run of Olympic golds ends with bronze in beam

Simone Biles' hopes of claiming five gold medals at the Rio Olympics were dashed at the Gymnastics Arena on Monday night.

The 19-year-old had to settle for bronze in the women's beam competition behind gold medallist Sanne Wevers of Holland and fellow American Lauren Hernandez.

Biles had already clinched gold in team, all-around and vault competitions, and is favourite to triumph in the floor competition on Tuesday.

Despite qualifying in first place, Biles registered a total score of 14.733, slipping during her routine and finishing well down on Wevers' cumulative total of 15.466.

Biles said: "I'm not disappointed in the medal that I received because anyone would love to have a bronze at an Olympic Games.

"I'm not sure. I didn't even know my foot slipped until I got off the beam and they replayed it. I don't really know what happened."
