All-Ireland winner's son makes 'best catch ever' by an American football punter

Odell Beckham’s miracle one-hander and Dez Bryant’s overturned beauty have ensured the American football world has been preoccupied with great catches lately.

Now Darragh O’Neill - son of Cork All-Ireland winner Colm - has joined the conversation with his own impressive piece of one-handed fielding.

USA Today billed it “the best catch anyone will ever see by a punter”. US sports site Deadspin.com called it “the sole highlight” of Saturday’s East-West Shrine Game in Florida, a post-season collegiate All-Star match-up.

Playing for the west, O’Neill was on the wrong end of a 19-3 defeat, but stole the show when he soared inside his own endzone to rescue a wayward snap that flew well above his head, preventing a safety before punting clear.

These All-Star games put players in the spotlight ahead of the NFL draft process and O’Neill did his prospects of a deal no harm.

Normally the punter for the Colorado Buffaloes, O’Neill is also Maurice Fitzgerald’s nephew.

He was also recruited to play basketball by the University of Denver.
