Premier League footballer Saido Berahino is set to appear in court charged with drink-driving on the M6 in Cheshire.

A court summons is understood to have been issued to the West Bromwich Albion striker, ordering him to appear before magistrates in Runcorn on January 19.

The star, who scored four goals in West Brom’s 7-0 win over Gateshead last Saturday, was arrested in the early hours of October 22 near Warrington.

He was later released on bail but has now been sent a postal requisition asking him to attend court.

A spokesman for Cheshire Constabulary said: “A 21-year-old man has been summonsed to appear before court after he was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

“The man was arrested on Wednesday 22 October 2014 after a patrol stopped a car travelling on the southbound carriageway of the M6 near junction 20 at around 3.39am.”

Berahino signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract with the Baggies in December 2013 and has scored 13 league and cup goals so far this season.

The England under-21 forward, who came to the UK from war-torn Burundi as a child, was selected for the full England squad in November but did not play in matches against Slovenia and Scotland.

A spokesman for Berahino’s club declined to comment on the court proceedings.
