American runner doesn’t let her baby bump slow her down

Athlete competes in National Championships while 34 weeks pregnant.

28-year-old Alysia Montano is expecting her first child in August and like many mums-to-be is trying to keep up with her normal life while expecting.

Montano is a professional athlete though so her idea of normal may be slightly different from the rest of us.

A middle distance runner, she is a five-time USA outdoor champion and represented her country in the 2012 Olympics.

She also recently qualified for the US Track and Field Championships. When she realised her race was taking place this week she decided to enter, despite being almost eight months pregnant.

Montano had the full support of her doctors and midwife and speaking afterwards said she was delighted she had gone ahead with it. She came last in her heat, finishing the 800m race in a time of 2 minutes 32.13 seconds but was happy with her run, saying her only concern was to make sure she wasn’t lapped.

She got a standing ovation from the crowd as she finished, and also tweeted a thank you for the messages of support and congratulations she had received.
