Eaton steals the show in Athlone

Olympic decathlon champion Ashton Eaton broke the 60 meter stadium record at tonight’s Athlone IT Grand Prix.

The American wrapped up his preparation for the defence of his World Indoor title in just over a week’s time clocked 6.69 seconds to etch his name on the futuristic arena’s record board.

“I love this arena and coming to Ireland,” Eaton said afterwards as he took long jump bronze behind Britain’s Daniel Bramble. Bramble jumping to gold with a best of 7.71 meters.

“The crowd where great here, they really got behind us,” smiled Eaton.

“The track is ultra fast and makes for great running. I’d love to come back to Ireland and compete again,” he added.

World heptathlon silver medallist Canadian Brianne Theisen also Eaton’s wife, took the women’s shot put title with a best of 13.46 meters and added the high jump passing the bar at 1.80 meters.

A roaring full house also saw Kelly Proper improve her own long jump stadium record when she jumped 6.49 meters.

Proper stepped onto the track a little later to win the 60 meters in 7.44 seconds, 13 hundreths of a second clear of Sarah Lavin.

It wraps up a great month in Athlone IT for Proper after she picked up two national indoor titles just over a week ago.

The loud crowd where silenced slightly as the senator Eamonn Coughlan mile failed to produce the first sub four minute indoor mile in Ireland.

Kilkenny man Eoin Everard the first across the line, just outside the magic barrier clocking 4 minutes 3 seconds.

Donegal man Karl Griffin took the 800 meter lunging over the line to pip Niall Tuohy with a time of 1:560:47, Tuohy just one hundredth of a second behind in silver place with Darragh Greene taking bronze.

Lagan Valley’s Katie Kirk stormed to 800 meter victory in 2.03.58 a time which is good enough to qualify for this Summers Commonwealth games.
