Mixed results for Irish athletes on eighth day of Paralympics

There have been mixed results for Irish athletes so far on the eighth day of the Paralympic games with Boccia hopeful Johnny Cronin unsuccessful in his bid, and cyclist Colin Lynch marked as DNF (Did Not Finish).

Sailing events were also cancelled due to a lack of wind.

Highlights:

Boccia:

Johnny Cronin was not successful in his bid in the BC3 Mixed Individual 1/8 Finals in the ExCeL Arena. Johnny lost out to his Singaporean competitor Nurul Binte Mohammad Taha 1-7.

He had played the same competitor in yesterday’s seeding match and had won 6-4.

Swimming:

Ellen Keane has placed 7th in the 200m Individual Medley Final.

The Dublin swimmer had a positive start and after the first 50m, she was in a strong 4th position. She then progressed to 3rd with 100m gone looked to be an excellent contender for the podium. Unfortunately she slipped back into 5th position after 150m and slipped further before the finish line to place her in 7th position finish with a time of 2:42:21

Ellen will be back in action on Saturday in the hope of progressing in her strongest event, the 100m Breaststroke.

Cycling:

It was a disappointing day for the cyclists as Enda Smyth was advised to withdraw before the event on the recommendation of his doctor.

Colin Lynch unfortunately crashed on the first corner and was listed as DNF (Did Not Finish).

Sailing:

Due to a lack of wind, today’s sailing was cancelled and medals have been awarded based on rankings at the end of race 10 which took place yesterday.

Therefore, Irish sailing team; John Twomey, Anthony Hegarty and Ian Costelloe finished 11th in the three person keelboat (sonar) competition in Weymouth and Portland.

The Dutch crew took 1st place, the Norwegian’s took silver and the Germans were awarded bronze.
