Ryan misses high jump final
Deirdre Ryan was disappointed as she went out in high jump qualifying at the Olympic Stadium today.
The 30-year-old cleared 1.80 metres first time and 1.85m at her second attempt, but failed her three goes at 1.90m to miss out on a top-12 spot required to progress.
“I am disappointed, I at least wanted to jump a season’s best, 1.90m,” said Ryan, who finished sixth at last year’s World Championships, having jumped an Irish record of 1.95m to qualify for the final.
“I have had a back injury, but I’ve had treatment twice a day and I didn’t feel it out there.
“My back just went into spasm and seized up and for a week I couldn’t really jog, but that was two weeks ago.”
Ryan enjoyed competing in front of a virtually full house, though, saying it felt like home support.
“The atmosphere was incredible,” she said. “The crowd were really behind me, cheering me every time.”
