Olympics round-up: Mixed day for Team Ireland

It has been a day of mixed results so far for Team Ireland at London 2012.

A fall on the cycling leg of the Women’s Triathalon meant Aileen Morrison had to settle for 43rd position,

Tori Pena also bowed out - the American-born pole vaulter failed to clear her first height of 4.1 metres after 3 attempts.

However there was some good news in other events.

Paddy Barnes defeated Cameroon's Thomas Essomba in the Men's Light Flyweight division on a scoreline of 15-10, meaning the Belfast fighter will box for his 2nd Olympic medal in Wednesday night’s Quarter Finals.

In sailing, Annalise Murphy sits just a single point off the lead ahead of Monday’s medal race in the Laser Radial Class.

The Dubliner finished 3rd in race 9,and 7th in race 10, giving her a tie for 3rd place just behind Lijia Xu (PRON: Lee-ja Zhoo) and Marit Bouwmeester.

In rowing, Sanita Puspure (pr: Puss-poor) put in a great performance to win the “C” Final in the Women's Single Sculls. The victory leaves her in 13th overall in the standings.

In track cycling, Martin Irvine will look to build on his solid mornings work when he competes in the Points and Elimination races in the next few minutes.

The Newtonard man logged a time of 13.5 seconds in this morning’s Flying Lap, leaving him in 9th place ahead of this evening's racing.

In show jumping, Billy Twomey registered 4 faults on his first round in the individual event but still managed to make tomorrow’s 2nd round. Cian O’Connor is also through, after he logged a Clear Round on “Blue Loyd”.

Rob Heffernan races in the final of the Men's 20k WALK in the next few minutes, he’s looking forward to finally getting started..
